James Moffat heads to Bathurst after an encouraging, but ultimately frustrating opening weekend with Tickford Racing at the Sandown 500.

A top ten finish was recorded by Moffat and his teammate Chaz Mostert, who are now aiming much higher for the next event – the Holy Grail on the Supercars calendar, the Bathurst 1000 in a fortnight’s time.

But the frustration was high – with multiple on track incidents which hampered the duo’s campaign, and is helping drive them for better results at Mount Panorama.

“The positive was our 1 lap speed, which was good as proved with our front row start for the qualifying races,” Moffat said.

“The disappointment was a series of moments which hurt our hopes when the whips were cracking on Sunday afternoon.”

“I got punted off while leading the qualifying race on Saturday – and then had to avoid a spinning car in my opening stint on Sunday – it’s disappointing but that’s how it goes.”

Still the duo in the #55 Super Cheap Auto Ford Falcon finished 10th, the best of the four car Tickford squad.

Triple 8 owned the podium with their three Holdens completing the trifecta led by race winners Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell.

The week after the AFL and NRL Grand Finals, it’s then the Supercars’ biggest week of the year – at Round 13 of the Championship, the Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

“We’ve got a couple of weeks to make some improvements for the big race, and I’m confident we can make our Falcon much better for Bathurst,” Moffat said.

“It’s our showpiece event, our Grand Final, the day everyone is watching – so we want to be up contending for the Peter Brock trophy.”

“Both Chaz and I love the place and love the race and hopefully we can be right there at the end with 20 laps to go on October 7.”

Moffat will be on double duty at Bathurst – also competing in the penultimate round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Championship – where he sits fifth in the title fight.

The Bathurst 1000 begins with opening practice commencing Thursday October 4.

All of the action is live throughout the weekend on Network Ten and Fox Sports.
