James Moffat is winding the clock back in more ways than one as he makes his return to the Supercars Championship for Retro Round at this weekend’s Sandown 500 in Melbourne.
Moffat will partner defending Pirtek Cup Enduro champion Chaz Mostert in a Tickford Racing Ford Falcon – that this weekend will be dressed in the colours of 2004 Super Cheap Auto racer Steve Ellery.

It’s a great opportunity for the 34 year old, who returns to the main game of the Supercars Series with a serious shot at the biggest events of the season.

“I think as a combination across these three race weekends we can be a seriously strong contender, and hopefully with a bit of luck we can jag some silverware,” Moffat said.

“I won’t lie, it’s a little unusual just racing in the enduros after so long as a full timer, but I’m super keen to make the next month and a half count.”

“I feel like I’m as experienced as anyone out there, and hopefully can compliment what Chaz is bringing to the table in the #55 machine.”

Moffat has kept his eye in this season in the Porsche Carrera Cup Championship – where he sits fifth with two rounds remaining.

That series races alongside the Supercars at the next two events – Bathurst and the Gold Coast – allowing Moffat to solely focus on making a strong start this weekend with Tickford with Sunday’s Sandown 500.

“My focus up until this point has been on Carrera Cup and now I can shift my full attention this weekend with Supercars we don’t have the Porsche there,” Moffat said.

“It’s been a tough season to date for the Tickford team, but the enduros tend to be where they are at their best, so we’re optimistic this can be the start of something really positive.”

“Chaz won the Enduro Cup last year with Steve Owen, he’s super hungry to do it again this year, and it’d be seriously great if we could!”

Mostert and Moffat team up for the first time on Friday with opening practice for the Sandown 500, with qualifying to follow on Saturday before the big race on Sunday.

The 500 kilometre enduro begins at 1.20pm EST on Sunday afternoon.
All of the action is live across the weekend on Network Ten and Fox Sports.
